Charlotte Brontė (1816-1855) was a British novelist, the eldest of the three famous Brontė sisters whose novels have become standards of English literature. Charlotte Brontė is best known for Jane Eyre (1847), one of the most famous of British novels. Charlotte continued her education at Roe Head, Mirfield, from 1831 to 1832. During this period (1833), she wrote her novella The Green Dwarf under the name of Wellesley. Charlotte returned as a teacher from 1835 to 1838. In 1839 she took up the first of many positions as governess to various families in Yorkshire, a career she pursued until 1841. In 1842 she and Emily travelled to Brussels to enroll in a pensionnat run by Constantin Heger and his wife Claire Zoé Parent Heger. She returned to Haworth in January 1844 and later used her time at the pensionnat as the inspiration for some of Villette (1853) and The Professor (1857).

From the Back Cover:

Following the tremendous popular success of Jane Eyre, which earned her lifelong notoriety as a moral revolutionary, Charlotte Bronte vowed to write a sweeping social chronicle that focused on "something real and unromantic as Monday morning". Set in the industrializing England of the Napoleonic wars and Luddite revolts of 1811-12, Shirley (1849) is the story of two contrasting heroines. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, who is trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory and whose bare life symbolizes the plight of single women in the nineteenth century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention. A work that combines social commentary with the more private preoccupations of Jane Eyre, Shirley demonstrates the full range of Bronte's literary talent.
