When Detective Lieutenant Ted Hammond is shot during a robbery at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1992, and later that day dies, Detective Lieutenant John Kingman, who believes he owes his life to his dead friend, vows to solve the case. After the investigation is derailed by circumstances beyond the police department's control, Kingman refuses to quit going after the 'cop killers.' His subsequent efforts lead to difficulties that result in a premature retirement. A year later, when the loot from the robbery is recovered from its hiding place, Kingman, still troubled by the unfinished business and also haunted by nightmares, leaves his Florida home and returns to Indianapolis. He becomes involved in 'mayhem and murder,' some of which puts him in the hospital, and some of which leads to the death of a number of people, including his mentor and friend, Albert Bauer. His mentor's death, plus an attempt to kill Kingman in the cemetery immediately after Bauer's funeral, stimulates Kingman to actions that culminate in the conclusion of the story.

Eighteen months after that, a change in direction resulted in a transfer to the Indiana University School of Nursing - Indianapolis. In addition to a BSN, he also has a graduate degree in instructional communications from Indiana University - Bloomington.
