9781411608283: Sacred Seasons: Celebrating Nature Spirituality as a Family

For those of us that embrace the theology of mysticism, Nature-based spirituality, or polytheism finding fun, enriching ways to involve our children in our beliefs can be challenging. Giving our offspring the compassion and capacity to look upon the Universe, Nature and themselves as divine and worth honouring and caring for is difficult in this time of narcissism and materialism. In this book I have created a section for each of the eight most celebrated holidays of modern pagan faith. Each section includes some folklore and origins, alternative names, activities, crafts, recipes, decorations and much more for each season. There are also miscellaneous patterns and decorations.

Introduction

For those of us that embrace the theology of mysticism, Nature-based spirituality, or polytheism finding fun, enriching ways to involve our children in our beliefs can be challenging. Giving our offspring the compassion and capacity to look upon the Universe, Nature and themselves as divine and worth honouring and caring for is difficult in this time of narcissism and materialism.

In this modern age of technologies and progress many of us parents are desperately seeking a way to return to a simpler way of life. A time where the pace is slower and the human race cared for each member of their community. We find our inspiration and peace out in Nature with Her never ending cycles of change that ebb and flow with the changing seasons.

But how do we get our children to acknowledge and revere the Mysteries of everyday life? We all want our children to grow up kind and empathetic. For us, alternative spiritualists, we also want to raise Earth stewards and open minded, productive members of society. First of all, start off with your beliefs. You can read all the published material in the world and attend a hundred workshops but it is what you believe that you should incorporate in the celebrations with your kids.

You can celebrate as subtly or as theatrically as best suits you and your family. Youíll also soon discover which members of your family enjoy the flamboyant revelling and singing or the quiet, personal moments of solitude and contemplation. You might also want to decide on a term or name to let your kids know what your faith is. As they get older they will probably ask since when they are at school they will be asked by friends, teachers, and peers.

If youíre grimacing at that last paragraph, I know. A lot of us donít like to place labels on ourselves or our children. Itís my philosophy to let my children grow and learn for themselves. I told them we were "Earthers" and that we practiced "Nature- based spirituality". In this way I have allowed my children to not be labelled in to one train of thought or pantheon. For all I know, they could grow up to be of a devout mainstream religion. If you tell your child, "Weíre pagans." You can be sure that after being repeated by your unsuspecting and sparkling eyed child at school or to your great Aunt Martha that youíll end up with more trouble than it is worth.

Now, on to the contents of this book. I have created a section for each of the eight most celebrated holidays of modern pagan faith. Each section includes some folklore and origins, alternative names, activities, crafts, recipes, decorations and much more for each season. There are also miscellaneous patterns and decorations. All patterns may be photocopied, scanned or traced in order to keep your book in good condition. All patterns are for personal and day care use only. Mass reproduction prohibited.
