Camden, New Jersey, is quite possibly the most troubled and dangerous city in America. But a far different story lies beneath this cold surface. It is a story of hope, of voices struggling desperately against deaf ears. In the summer of 1999, a college student named Stuart Albright arrived in Camden full of youthful idealism and a na´ve sense of justice. Blessed Returns is the moving, deeply personal account of a young man's coming-of-age amidst a tumultuous and life-changing summer. Albright worked at a youth facility in the heart of Camden's blighted, industrial core, and he discovered a community governed by faith and resilience in the face of unimaginable despair. It is a place filled with passionate and unforgettable characters. Moving seamlessly between a heartbreaking tale of loss and a forceful call for social change, this book is a message that cries out to be heard. It is a story laid bare with all the honesty and confession of a meaningful prayer.

From the Publisher:

Camden, New Jersey, is quite possibly the most troubled city in America. It is a city of crime, pollution, and political corruption. Three of Camden’s most recent mayors are felons, and the city constantly flirts with bankruptcy. In response to Camden’s 2004 ranking as America’s dangerous city, Police chief Edwin Figueroa recently said, "I feel like I’m in Fallujah. I don’t have enough soldiers. The enemy is out there. And we’re fighting the same battle over and over and over again." Camden is, by all accounts, a city falling steadily into oblivion. But a far different story lies beneath this cold surface. Blessed Returns, by Stuart Albright, provides a refreshing and hopeful counterpoint. It is a story filled with voices struggling courageously against deaf ears. In the summer of 1999, Albright was a college student who arrived in Camden full of youthful idealism and a naïve sense of justice. Albright worked at a youth facility in the heart of Camden’s blighted! , industrial core, and he discovered a community governed by faith and resilience in the face of unimaginable despair. "I was amazed by the children and adults I worked with," Albright said. "They never saw me as an outsider, and that forced me to reconsider the ways we often view the urban poor. We learn to sidestep guilt by viewing these people as faceless. But everything changes when you attach a name to someone’s cries for help." Working in Camden forever altered the direction of Albright’s life. After graduating from UNC Chapel Hill, Albright taught for a year in one of Boston’s lowest-performing high schools. He also completed a Masters degree from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education with a focus on urban studies. "That summer in Camden was my coming-of-age," Albright said. "My path as an educator was set from that time onward." Albright returned to North Carolina after Harvard, and he is currently in his fourth year as a teacher and football coach in the Durham Public Schools. "Blessed Returns simply had to be written." Albright said. "I didn’t have a choice in the matter. It is my humble testimony to the people of Camden."

About the Author:

Stuart Albright was born and raised in the textile town of Gastonia, North Carolina. He was captain of his high school football team, although he was, by his own admission, an average wide receiver at best. After high school, Albright earned a B.A. in English from UNC Chapel Hill, where he was a North Carolina Leadership Fellow and an avid participant in UNC’s well-regarded Creative Writing Program. He also devoted much energy and enthusiasm to Carolina athletics, supporting numerous Tar Heel victories over Duke in football and basketball. Albright then earned a M.Ed. with a focus on teaching and urban studies from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. Albright taught at one of Boston’s lowest performing high schools during this time, before moving back to North Carolina, where he currently coaches football and teaches American Literature at Jordan High School in Durham. Albright loves what he does for a living. He is happily married, and he currently lives with his wife in an old bungalow in downtown Raleigh.
