About the Author:

My husband and I moved to Florida several years ago and really love it here. I was involved in prison ministry in New England and have become similarly involved here. I am so blessed! I teach three to four Bible studies each week and also counsel the women. The response has been overwhelming! They are trying to change their lives and hopefully by expounding on the Scriptures and the love of God, the change will be permanent.

Chapter 1

DEPRESSION CAN BE CURED Then Jesus said to His disciples, "That's why I'm telling you to stop worrying about your life-what you will eat-or about your body-what you will wear. For life is more than food and the body more than clothing." (Luke 12:22-23 ISV) The word life used in Luke chapter 12 is psuche in the Greek, like psyche. I am convinced from observation that the people who are mentally unbalanced or depressed are always thinking about themselves. They go over and over all the hurts they have experienced and in so doing, make matters much worse. Our enemy, satan, is more than pleased to add fuel to the fire of discontent. So Jesus gave us an antidote - stop thinking about ourselves!

Ever since psychology became the rage, people have been having many more mental problems. It seems that people have labels for so many of their problems because of over-analyzing their lives. Jesus and time will heal any wounds. Can't we trust Him?

For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. Jesus continued: Consider the crows. They don't plant or harvest, they don't even have a storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds! (Luke 12:24 ISV)

Consider the crows. You don't see depressed birds flying around. They are busy! They provide nests for their young and they provide food for themselves and their young. Why don’t we take an example from the birds and stay busy for others and in so doing, we probably would not become depressed. We can learn from God’s creations. Jesus also said: Can any of you add an hour to your span of life by worrying? (Luke 12:25 ISV)

Can we, by thinking about ourselves, make ourselves taller? If we are overweight, the best way to trim down is to get busy and stop thinking about what we will eat. Can we add to our life span by worrying about getting older? Getting older causes depression for quite a few people. Maybe one of the reasons is that we are such a youth oriented country. The only alternative that I see to growing older is to die young. So, let us rejoice that the Lord has granted us a long life that we may enjoy our grandchildren and the fruit of our labors.

Why don’t we become more than the way we look? When the bloom of youth fades, there should be something left, which is goodness, peace, wisdom, and holiness. Peter said: Your beauty should not be an external one, consisting of braided hair or the wearing of gold ornaments and dresses. Instead, it should be the inner disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great value in the sight of God. (1Pe 3:3-4 ISV)

Dear Paul told us: Never worry about anything, but in every situation let your petitions be made known to God in prayers and requests, with thanksgiving. Then God's peace, which goes far beyond anything we can imagine, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is fair, whatever is pure, whatever is acceptable, whatever is commendable, if there is anything of excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy-keep thinking about these things. (Philippians 4:6-8 ISV)

So we are told never to worry about anything. The word worry in the Greek (New Testament was written first in the Greek language) means to be careful, take thought or to be anxious. Jesus will free us from all anxiety if we call on Him and lean on Him. He promised us: And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32 ISV) Free is free, right? If Jesus sets us free, He does not set us half free; He sets us totally free.

He also exhorted us: Consider how the lilies grow. They don't work or spin yarn, but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. Now if that's the way God clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and thrown into an oven tomorrow, how much more will he clothe you-you who have little faith? So stop concerning yourselves about what you will eat or what you will drink, and stop being distressed. (Luke 12:27-29 ISV)

Stop being distressed or of a doubtful mind. The words doubtful mind mean raised in mid air - that is suspended - to fluctuate or be anxious. That makes us vacillate from one opinion to another.

Jesus told us: ...I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 ISV) So the closer we get to Jesus, through prayer, the Word, praise and worship, the less doubts we will have about life and eternity.

Again He said: For it is the gentiles who are concerned about all these things. Surely your Father knows that you need them! Instead, be concerned about his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you as well. (Luke 12:30-31 ISV) By gentiles He means the people who are pagans, who don't know God. Concerned in this case means to seek after, desire, or be about.

So if the simple things of life, like flowers and birds and sunsets are so beautiful, why don't we just enjoy them as a gift from God and enjoy life as a gift from God, and try to be the person that He created us to be?

If we stay concerned about the things of God, we are more likely not to become depressed, anxious, or worried. Our minds and thoughts will be way above those petty things in life that formerly got us down. Try it! Every time you feel as if you are getting depressed or blue, say a prayer to Jesus and ask Him to loose your burden. Our prayers won’t fail because He never fails!
