For someone afraid of the dark, living in the Arctic is a severe test of courage. There the sun doesn't shine all winter. Jean-Paul, a young Canadian boy, struggles to hide his fear and adjust to life in the Northwest Territories, where he is taunted and excluded from activities by a group of Inuit boys because of his small size and a limp caused by a birth defect. When Jean-Paul finally succeeds in impressing the boys with the tricks he's taught his husky, Sasha, they agree to let him join their club, the Ice Patrol. But as part of the initiation, they force him into a deserted igloo that is rumored to be haunted, where he must remain for two hours. The forced imprisonment, with no light and only Sasha for company, proves to be just the beginning of the most serious challenges to face Jean-Paul in the harsh Arctic environment. The Haunted Igloo was first published in hard cover by Houghton Mifflin, 1991. There have been two paperback editions, but only the Lulu print-on-demand edition is currently in print.About the Author:
While living in Michigan in the 1970s, Bonnie Turner and her family adopted a husky named Sasha, the same name as Jean-Paul's dog in the book, which let to the writing of The Haunted Igloo. After the book was published, the author visited grade schools with a life-sized Inuit doll, encouraging students to read and write, and offering "polar bear hugs" with her autograph. She treasures the fan mail from those days, especially this one: "Mrs. Turner, I'll give you a million dollars for that book!!!" She says this is the best age group to visit, when children are innocent, full of energy and curiosity.
Turner has written other books for children, and also two adult novels. She is a doting grandmother and great-grandmother, and lives in De Pere, Wisconsin, with a feisty but lovable tortoiseshell cat named Jazzbaby, who walks on her keyboard and sits on the computer mouse while her owner plots a young-adult novel set in the Flapper era. ~ July 4, 2011
