9781411693777: The Invisible Matrix: The Evolution of Altruism, Culture, Human Behavior, & the Memory Network

Why did we evolve to be altruistic? Why did we evolve to value a society of equals? How did we become capable of culture? For the first time promising clues to these puzzles are emerging from an unexpected field - computer science. Delicate living systems and bulky computers, according to a growing body of research, are both information systems engaged in the storage, transmission, and processing of information. This shared characteristic of life systems and our information technology devices gives us an opportunity to study human evolution using concepts from computer science. Such analysis points to the existence of an important 'invisible' adaptation in human beings. This 'invisible' adaptation is the reason we evolved to be cultural beings, who are altruistic, who value equality, and our aging elders. www.altruism-evolution.com

Review:

The Invisible Matrix is incredibly clearly written and interesting too. The main points about OMN, language and altruism, among others, all seems to fit together well and it provides a different perspective on the evolutionary value of language as well as altruism. It is a good book. -- - Dr. James Reggia, Prof. Computer Science & Neurology, University of Maryland

This thought-provoking book argues, if I may paraphrase in my own words, that altruistic individuals, acting in concert, will outcompete selfish individuals over time, and that the key to their acting in concert, is information sharing protocols. From these protocols have evolved our human behaviors of cooperation, altruism, and many aspects of our culture. Thus our human culture itself has evolved to tacitly contain an "invisible" human memory network that has been essential to our survival and to our progress as a species. -- - Dr. Karl Gustafson, University of Colorad (Editor) Quantum Mechanics in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics
