From the Author:
This book will help educators gain valuable insight into how to be a more sensitive and effective teacher by analyzing the mistakes of others. All teachers make mistakes - use of uninformed strategies, impulsive acts, unconventional discipline tactics, inadvertent slights, remarks in jest, and more - and often they're unaware of the impact and long-term effects of their words and actions. Teachers may do and say things that traumatize students, leaving them psychologically scarred from childhood on into adulthood.

Learn how to avoid the most prevalent and hurtful mistakes so that so that students can be more successful learners. The book features over 300 scenarios from teachers recounting their worst experiences as students. In 25 Biggest Mistakes Teachers Make and How to Avoid Them, she presents brief scenarios in the former students' own words and follows each with an Rx -a prescription for a better solution. These recommendations are based on the author's many years of teaching and sound educational theory.

The result: an important teaching tool for professional and staff development workshops, for pre-service teachers, practicing teachers, administrators, counselors and all others concerned with effective teaching.

The scenarios are organized into six sections: - Discipline - Teacher-Student Relations - Classroom Policy and Practices - Classroom Management and Instruction - Personality and Professionalism - Teaching Style and Behavior

The solutions and recommendations provide teachers with a map to successfully navigate the academic terrain. Whether used for professional or staff development workshops or as a tool for individual teachers, this book offers alternative strategies that will help create better teachers. This book is appropriate for anyone who works with children and may be of interest to anyone who has ever sat in a classroom.
