Marco's story of a middle-aged woman who believed she shot and killed her daughter's boyfriend is told simply and with compassion. The woman having confessed to the crime, her devoted husband seeks the advice of an elderly lawyer who is, unknown to the husband, inexperienced in handling major criminal cases. The lawyer thinks that, with the woman's confession, it would be a simple matter to work out a plea agreement and earn an easy fee. He nevertheless feels compelled to investigate the crime, and soon becomes convinced of her innocence. Unable to persuade the prosecutor or convince the authorities of his conclusions, the lawyer is reluctantly forced to trial--a trial filled with surprises and unexpected drama. A final tragic spin to this adult crime novel emphasizes the failure of the authorities to investigate adequately the killing and those present at the crime scene.
