Grayson Donald, seventeen years old, has just hanged himself from a basketball hoop next to a playground in Centreville, North Virginia (NoVA). The question is, Why? In this incisive dissection of the author's hometown, James Boice scratches its shiny suburban surface to reveal a place formed from "a cloud that slid west and met with the humidity and spent buckshot cartridges and Civil War bones clad in blue and gray to create concrete and vinyl siding and front yards laid in chunks, child care centers and video rental places" An exciting new voice in fiction, James Boice blends sharp social observations with dark humor and remarkable prose. In both passing glimpses and intimate interior monologues, we come to know Grayson's family, his fellow students, his neighbors, and many who knew him only slightly, if at all. A portrait of a town emerges that renders Grayson's suicide both devastating and inevitable. NoVA is a unique and fascinating depiction of the American suburb.

From the Author:

First of all, my twin obsessions are professional sports and Northern Virginia.

NoVA is how we natives refer to Northern Virginia, usually in a self-deprecating ironic kind of way.

The book takes place in Centreville, a once-dinky town farm town that basically exploded in the last 20 years into a small metropolis, where I happen to have grown up. It's a weird place.

A lot of people might not know what northern Virginia is, exactly. It's not just a boring suburb. It's a new place sprawling very rapidly and with a booming population where--I guarantee--everybody will be from in five years. And it's like LA but instead of everyone working in the entertainment industry, everyone's a government bureaucrat. But the people (especially the kids) are sort of the same. So NoVA is like an LA novel but it takes place in the capital of our country and is casted with those who make our government and military go.

From the Back Cover:

Praise for James Boice and MVP:

"An incredible novel." - Sherman Alexie

"An astounding synthesis of reality, imagination, and psychological clarity." - Chuck Klosterman

"A brutally incisive roman a clef...[James Boice's] jarring stream-of-consciousness prose clicks once you realize he's given his narcissistic protagonist the deranged neuroses of a Bret Easton Ellis character. His portrait...is a frightening trip through the misogynistic, homophobic mind of a professional athlete." - Entertainment Weekly

"Dark, sordid, creepy, and not exactly beach reading, but good luck putting it down." - ESPN the Magazine

"A fantastic, chilling portrait of a vain pro athlete." - Chicago Tribune

"Boice's prose grabs you and never lets go....MVP is the start of something big." - Orlando Sentinel

"[James Boice] masterfully employs a style all his own." - Boston magazine

"James Boice's electric debut...offers an astute portrait...it also succeeds in depicting the sullied underbelly of contemporary professional sports. More important, Boice allows us to witness the creation of an unapologetic monster." - The Cleveland Plain Dealer
