This book is now sold under the title "The Caretakers". Mutations triggered by accidental irradiation force Joel Tranwyr and several other highly empathic caretakers to flee Earth and potential exploitation. The unscrupulous Corporation sends another exposed caretaker, Bubba Smith, and an unnatural army after them and then enslaves worlds left in their wake. Centuries later, Joel’s descendent, Gareth, seeks help from the past in an attempt to free his adopted world. The legendary woman warrior he expected turns out to be disillusioned 20th-century graduate student, Lorne McAllister. McAllister, who carries around more baggage than a 747, clashes with the Caretaker right from the start. She denies the reality of both Gareth and the nightmarish world in which she finds herself. Her grudging aid leads to a near-death experience that both emphasizes and ameliorates the fantastic nature of his universe. After Gareth’s nemesis tries to kill McAllister in her own time, she devises an ambitious plan to end Corporation tyranny once and for all.

Lark Burnham has spent most of her life immersed in both science fiction and science fact. Her youth and early adulthood was influenced by the original Star Trek series, the U. S. moon missions, the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien and Stephen R. Donaldson, and the original Star Wars trilogy. The re-release of the latter during the mid 1990’s inspired her to start writing fiction. She received a Masters degree in swine nutrition from Kansas State University, Manhattan (1995), and a doctorate in ruminant nutrition from Texas Tech University, Lubbock (2004). Lark is currently a nutritionist for Natur’s Way, small family-owned company in northeastern Kansas that produces probiotic supplements for pets and livestock.
