Synopsis
This book presents, in a user-friendly form, a guide to the understanding of acid-base physiology and clinical disorders of acid-base balance. The unique feature of this book is that instead of the traditional description of proton and bicarbonate behavior as vectors, this book relies on physical metaphors_ exchangers, pumps and ion channels _ in much the same way as the heart is understood as a pump and the lungs as a bellows. This presentation is strongly supported by the present understanding of the shape and function of these transport proteins.

About the Author
Jerome Lowenstein M.D. , a nephrologist, is Professor of Medicine at New York University Shool of Medicine. As a teacher, investigator, and clinician, he has spent much of his career investigating and teaching about acid-base disorders, electrolyte physiology and renal function. He is author of "Henderson's Equation" (Gadd Books, Great Barrington, MA, 2008) a novel about the relationship between Lawrence J. Henderson and a young medical student acolyte at Harvard Medical School in the early part of the 20th century.
