9781420808971: The Search for the First English Settlement in America: America's First Science Center

About the Book This book describes the first attempt by the English to gain a foothold in today's United States, 22 years before Jamestown, Virginia. These Elizabethans investigated the natural resources of Virginia and North Carolina. Their positive findings encouraged the English to try again at Jamestown. American technology began in 1585 with a make-shift assay furnace in an unlikely spot-a small island inside the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This book describes what the noted archaeologist Ivor NoŽl Hume calls "America' First Science Center." But this name belies the humble birth of our technology in a small shed formed of horizontal logs. The area of technological activity has been pin pointed by archaeologists. However, the location on Roanoke Island of the First English Settlement in America is still disputed. According to government historians, it was located at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. However, this volume casts doubt on the official line: "In this book, The Search for the First English Settlement in America, Historian Gary Grassl re-examines the evidence both archaeologically and documentary and puts forth a convincing argument that at the Fort Raleigh site seeing should not be believing. In so doing, he makes a major contribution to the annals of Roanoke Island. At the same time, he addresses the still vexing question of where to look for the archaeological footprints left by both the first and second colonizing efforts." These are the words of Noel Hume, America's foremost authority on early English colonization. This book reads like a mystery novel, and the readers is encouraged to play historical detective. The author examines clues on the ground and in ancient documents. He offers evidence--pro and con. But the challenge for the reader lies in reaching his own conclusions about some intriguing mysteries at the beginning of our country.

From the Publisher:

We may trace the earliest beginnings of our country to the 107 men who established the First English Settlement in 1585. Likewise, we may trace the genesis of our mining and metals industry to the activities of the German mineral specialists among the first settlers. While the Engish took the lead and made up the large majority of the pioneers on Roanoke Island, the First Settlement was not a purely English enterprise. Side by side with them labored Irishmen, Germans, Frenchmen and others. While it was not quite modern America in miniature, the First Colony foreshadowed the diverse, pluralistic society that would come to characterize our nation. We even witness religious diversity, among the Christians appears a Jew--the metallurgist Joachim Gans. However, we do not see these nationalities feuding and fighting as in Europe but working together. People from all over the world have contributed their numbers and strength to the American people. We are, in fact, a nation of nations, and it all began on Roanoke.

American technology began in 1585 in an unlikely spot--the small island of Roanoke inside the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This book explores what Noel Hume has dubbed "America's First Science Center." But this name belies the humble birth of our technology in a small shed bordered by horizontal logs. Here the "mineral man" Gans tested for silver content copper objects obtained from the native people. But why did he use an ersatz assay oven made of locally fired bricks? This at a time when an assayer never left home without his professionally constructed metal furnace? This and many other questions about the first English Settlement are tackled in this book.

From the Author:

The precise location of the First English Settlement on the Island of Roanoke is still much in dispute. At the same time, he addresses the still vexing question of where to look for the archaeological footprints left by both the first and second colonizing efforts." These are the words of Ivor Noel Hume, America's foremost authority on early English colonization.

What clues can we gather from the leader of the Lost Colony John White, cartographers, early inhabitants of Roanoke Island or the Colonial General Assembly? If the author's assumptions are correct, archaeologists have been digging in the wrong place for the Settlement for over 50 years. But where then was this elusive village and fort?

In 1948, the National Park Service re-excavated an old earthwork at Fort Raleigh NHS and called it "Fort Raleigh." However, was the original of this little dirt sconce really erected by Raleigh's people? What clue does the big gap in the center of its western bastion offer? Why does the earthwork resemble 18th century star forts? Is it true, as the author suggests, that the Elizabethans had nothing to do with it? That it was originally dug more than a century later during the French and Indian War?

This book reads like a mystery novel, and the reader is encouraged to play historical detective. However, this is not a work of fiction; it deals strictly in facts. The author examines clues on the ground and in ancient documents. He offers evidence--pro and con. But the challenge for the reader lies in reaching his own conclusions.
