"A story of INSPIRATION... Nathan is truly rising up and moving forward" - Robin Roberts, ABC Good Morning America "A story WORTHY of the BIG SCREEN" - The Boston Globe "Not your average WARD of the STATE" - The Enterprise "Walking TALL" - Boston Herald A Walking Peace is a non-fiction account of the coming of age of a young African American man adopted and raised by a deeply religious but profoundly troubled family in inner-city Boston in the 1980s and 90s. It addresses the author's entanglement with the issues of abandonment, poverty, and homelessness. It profiles his search for racial identity, self-worth, and love-his quest for the "walking peace" of the title. This memoir offers a graphic description of the physical, verbal, and sexual abuse the author secretly endured throughout much of his childhood at the hands of family members. It focuses primarily, however, not on his victimization but on his transcendence of his circumstances through the combined powers of religious faith and a musical vocation. </

About the Author:

Mr. Landers was born, a child of rape, to a teenaged runaway mother in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976. He became a ward of the state and was eventually adopted and raised by a respected yet secretly and profoundly dysfunctional family in the Roxbury section of Boston. Having survived a childhood filled with physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, he vowed not to succumb to the risks that plagued the environment in which he grew up. He overcame the despair and life-threatening obstacles of abuse, poverty, and homelessness through the cultivation of his skills as a self-taught musician, his pursuit of higher education, and his dedication to a mission of helping at-risk youth. Mr. Landers's accomplishments include earning a degree in liberal arts from Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Massachusetts, founding an independent record label, and starting a publishing company. He has lectured to thousands of teenagers throughout the commonwealth of Massachusetts, including special appearances as the keynote speaker for the Mayor of Boston Youth Summit and Child Abuse Prevention seminars. Currently, Mr. Landers is a full-time senior at Berklee College of Music in Boston, the world's largest independent music college and a premier institution for the study of contemporary music. Mr. Landers has been extensively interviewed and profiled in the press. On June 27, 2002, he made his debut on national television on ABC's "Good Morning America" broadcast live from New York City. He subsequently appeared on CBS's "Talk of the Town," WGBH's "Greater Boston with Emily Rooney," and "Fox News Live." He has been interviewed and written up in Positive Teens magazine and has been the focus of cover stories published in the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, the Brockton Sunday Enterprise, the Woonsocket Call, the Nashville Pride, the Knoxville News Sentinel, and the Tennesean. About the Co-authorBeverly Ballaro, Mr. Landers's editor / co-author, is the associate editor of the Harvard Med

It focuses primarily, however, not on his victimization but on his transcendence of his circumstances through the combined powers of religious faith and a musical vocation. Even though I was filled with rage at what others had done to me, I did not become a fighter against others. Yes, I blame the people who abused, raped, and abandoned me. I blame the system for placing me in an abusive home. But as much as I want to see my attackers brought to God s justice, I know that by becoming what they never expected me to be, I will have achieved the true peace that I ve always been looking for. - NATHAN C.
