It has been said, "If you can remember the 1960''s you probably weren''t really there." Well, what if you wrote down what you did and read it later? It just might make some fascinating reading. This is one young man''s story of quitting school and heading out on the road during this important time and the many madcap adventures he experiences while hanging out with some very interesting people who actually admit that they did inhale and ingest and imbibe. Although many stories have been written about this time period and much analysis has been done to put causes and reasons to events and circumstances few tales are as engaging as this one. It really draws you in and allows you to live this story as your own. It is also unique in its presentation of St. John and the Virgin Islands as a vital part of the "60''s subculture, which until now has been silent and unknown except to the lucky few who were there. John Shaffer is an International Performing and Recording Artist, Musician, Composer and Arranger. He has also been a teacher, minister, writer, sailor, philosopher, businessman and father. During the late 1960''s he traveled to the Virgin Islands and later hitchhiked across the United States and back. During the 1970''s, he pastored the First Church of Metaphysical Science while working on his doctoral thesis. After receiving a Doctorate in Metaphysics in 1978 he returned to the Virgin Islands and began a career as a jazz musician. During that period of seventeen years he taught in the school system, opened a music store, owned and operated a bar/restaurant, performed over six thousand gigs with many famous musicians and also as a non-denominational minister performed over four thousand wedding ceremonies in five different languages for people from all over the world while raising his two daughters. In 1989, while operating the largest entertainment booking agency in the Virgin Islands, Hurricane Hugo destroyed his home and sank his sailboat. This amazing story is the subject of his second book. After living on a converted ferryboat in the early 1990''s he moved his family to Florida where he currently resides, teaches music privately, performs and continues to write.
