As the human population increases, many other species are decreasing, becoming endangered and even extinct. Prolific development and urban sprawl all over the world are destroying Earth's natural environments. Wild elephants are disappearing rapidly. In fact, the Asian elephant is considered an endangered species. The story The Last Wild Elephant is about a compassionate young boy, Jeremy, who becomes interested and concerned about elephants after finding a fascinating informational book about them. Witnessing elephants in captivity leaves him feeling very disappointed. So, he vows to save money, learn all he can about elephants, and go find them in the wild. The time comes, and Jeremy leaves home and goes on an emotional journey in search of wild elephants. From Asia to Africa he travels in search of a lifelong dream.

From the Author:

As the human population increases, many other species are decreasing, becoming endangered and even extinct. Prolific development and urban sprawl all over the world are destroying Earth’s natural environments. Wild elephants are disappearing rapidly. In fact, the Asian elephant is considered an endangered species.

This book is a reflection of my overall concern about the loss of natural habitats around the world as humans penetrate the wilderness. It is a prediction of what might come to be if we are not careful.

About the Author:

Wendy Kerner is an elementary school teacher in the mountains of Colorado. Immersing students in all genres of literature from poetry to picture books to historical fiction is an essential part of her teaching. Through her travels she came to learn more about elephants and their plight and developed a great appreciation for these intelligent, compassionate creatures.

Wendy’s inspiration for writing this story came from an experience she had in Thailand. She learned that elephants are torn from their mothers when they are very young and put into "crush pens" in order to "crush" their spirit so they are submissive to training. In the tiny pens, the elephants can barely move. The calves are poked with sharp, pointy sticks and deprived of food, water, and sleep. When the elephants leave the pens, they begin a life in chains working for their mahouts (or trainers). They may perform at circus shows or work for trekking companies carrying people through the rain forest.

After learning about the treatment of these innately gentle creatures, she wanted to help. She discovered an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai run by a wonderful Thai woman, Sangduen Chailert (Lek). At Lek’s Elephant Nature Park, injured, sick, and abused elephants are rescued and taken care of in a large, lush park where they freely roam about. Lek and her mahouts use kind, humane means of training the elephants. Wendy was a volunteer at the park and came to love the elephants there. It was amazing that as cruelly as they had been treated, they were still very docile towards humans.

Unfortunately, the number of wild elephants is decreasing rapidly mainly due to habitat loss. Therefore, ten to twenty percent of the profits of the sales of her book will go to the Elephant Nature Park and other organizations helping protect elephants and their habitats. There are sanctuaries in the United States dedicated to helping these intelligent, compassionate creatures.
