In 1850, Prussian immigrant Gregor Opfer was sentenced to life imprisonment in Americaís most infamous prison, Sing Sing Penitentiary. A deeply religious man, Opfer believes his sentence is his penance for the evil life he led in Prussia, and so he endures the inhumane living and working conditions with unusual poise and dignity. One night, a routine beating turns especially violent and leaves Opfer crippled, effectively sowing the seeds of discontent. What the guards donít realize is that Opfer is a highly trained former assassin of Kaiser Friedrich Wilhelm IVís secret terror squad, Die Sonneleute, and he can escape anytime he pleases, crippled or not. And sooner or later theyíre going to push him too far.
