A poet once wrote that the present is but a rebirth of the past. Tuyl invites us into his past, where he experienced the horrors of German concentration camps and the terror of warfare. He does so with language and descriptions that draw the reader into the pain and the agony of those times. As he became a preacher and a writer these encounters with death and suffering were always an influence that set the tone for his work. His sermons find their origin in suffering and anxiety and yet express the triumph of grace, never getting themselves wrapped in despairing pessimism. Rather, he invites the reader into the hope of a better world, where in the words of the prophet Isaiah, “swords shall be beaten into plowshares.”
