A few years on the St. Joseph Police Department was one of the defining time periods of the author’s life. He learned the inside workings of a metropolitan police department, including the politics, personalities, and problems encountered on an everyday basis by the average working cop. Being at the bottom of the heap as a rookie, then just being one of the guys and, finally, the jump to training officer and supervisor, the basic job stayed the same, but the responsibilities involved grew. He learned that if most of those problems were looked at with a grain of salt and some common sense, they always worked themselves out. As he stated when asked, “I learned from partners of mine and they were all home town cops.”
