Sheriff Charley Brown was a hero! He joined the Union Army in 1862. At 16 years of age, he was captured by Confederates but escaped to rejoin his regiment. He was assigned to Fort Pembina, Dakota Territory, in 1870, and in 1875 was elected sheriff of Pembina County. He encountered problems with Fenians, Indians, and the toughs who were brought in to build the railroads. He envisioned the future and encouraged many Easterners to move west to the Dakota Territory. He adjusted to every type of crime and brought law and order to a grateful community. (Arson, murder and hangings were prevalent at the time.) Travel was mainly by stage coach, steamboat, or railroad. Charley’s romance with a beautiful Metis girl had a surprise ending. His epitaph said it all.
