Chuck Slate, the author, was born in Connecticut. He and his wife Marilyn were married in December of 1950. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in the year 2000. The plans were to spend their fiftieth anniversary in Australia and New Zealand. The subject described in this book almost derailed that trip but they managed. They returned from that trip just before the original publishing of this book. Marilyn and Chuck have four birth children (three boys and a girl). Chuck joined IBM in August of 1956. The family moved several times because of Chuck's job. They have lived in Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia. Marilyn and Chuck also spent six months in England on temporary assignment. Chuck has retired from three different disciplines and has held jobs that range from dairy farming and electronic test design to operating his own business. Since he last retired in 1991, Chuck and Marilyn have volunteered for a number of non-profit organizations. Since 1992, he and his wife Marilyn have provided a home for foster children, sometimes taking in more than one at a time. Before they retired from fostering they had a total of 60 foster care placements Chuck has previously had his first book published which was entitled There Are No Bad Kids. It was published by 1st Books Library in January, 2000 and re published in 2007 by Trafford.
