Nuclear power systems were developed to provide useful energy for the generation of electricity as well as power energy used to propel boats, submarines, power plants, and of course weapons of mass destruction. The authors of this book provided necessary knowledge to capture nuclear produced energy for non-military utilization. Because of their combined knowledge of both nuclear and non-nuclear physics, there were times they were asked to aid in the development of the atomic bomb. Through the authors' accomplishments, the benefits of creating and utilizing energy from nuclear reactions was shown to be naturally acceptable and controllable. Their work recognizes nuclear based energy for its benefits and not for a weapon of mass-destruction.

About the Author:

William Wachter Mr. Wachter is a principal inventor of the SSW nuclear reactor used in shipboard applications and of safe storage systems for spent nuclear fuel from nuclear electric generating stations. The development of shipboard applications for nuclear power with his designs has led to the only nuclear power plants that have been produced in quantity in the USA. Later as a consultant, he saw a need to provide safe and efficient storage of highly irradiated spent nuclear fuel from commercial nuclear power plants. His reactor inventions have had a positive material impact on the defense systems of the United States during the "cold war" and his inventions in spent fuel storage systems have helped to achieve safe long-term storage. These inventions have also had a significant impact on the Pittsburgh area because of the engineering efforts and the manufacturing of products generated by these inventions. Today nuclear power is accepted as standard for major naval vessels and over 27,000 spent fuel cells are safely stored in spent fuel racks of Mr. Wachter's design. Ionics, Inc. currently offers fuel racks of local manufacture with a recently patented Wachter design. Mr. Wachter earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1946 and a Master of Science Degree from Case Institute of Technology in 1955. Mr. Wachter is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and of the American Nuclear Society. He resides in Wexford, Pennsylvania, where he continues to conduct his consulting business, Wachter Associates. So far, he has thirty U.S. patents in addition to numerous patent applications held under Secrecy. John Nevshemal Mr. Nevshemal has extensive as well as unique experience in the analysis, operation, design, construction, modification/maintenance and D&D
