This Fisherman Gansey book contains 21 patterns for creating Gansey sweaters. Gansey sweaters are a combination of knit and purl stitches. They have always been very popular in Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The Gansey sweater is the mainstay of the Gansey knitting industry which can be dated back to the late fifteenth century. Allegedly, Ganseys were knit with particular patterns to help identify sailors drowned at sea. Directions are written for the knitting machine. Hand knitters are able to knit these sweaters by following the same directions. There are graphs for each sweater size, plus hints and tips on knitting Ganseys. Schematics are in sizes Small, Medium, Large, X Large and XX Large. Fisherman Ganseys was my first book and originally in black and white with eleven sweaters. It sold out four times. On the fifth reprinting 10 extra sweaters were added, and now, everything is in color. This book is not intended to be an instruction book on how to use a knitting machine. It is assumed that machine knitters have a basic knowledge of their knitting machine and how to set it up for pattern work.

My machine knitting began 50 years ago in 1960 after a demonstration by a friend on her new knitting machine. My first machine was bought when I saw the possibilities of being able to knit various designs into a sweater much faster than I could by hand. By 1965, I began designing clothing for the knitting machine. As the years went by, I had numerous requests to write a book featuring the patterns and designs that had been in large Style Shows in Seattle. Ten books were written before injuries from a bad auto accident in 1991 stopped my designing and machine knitting for many years. Now I am back designing and writing books.
