The conscientious wound management surgeon learns something with every case. But to correctly analyse and synthesize the information requires a good deal of reflection and understanding which is difficult in a high-pressured enviroment. Personal experience supplemented by reading, conferences, and direct physician interaction adds to the knowledge base, but at a slow pace. The techniques illustrated here have been tested and improved over two decades of continuous innovation. The goal of this book is to compress the learning curve for the care of all skin wounds so that the newly minted dermatologic surgeon can immediately and confidently care for simple and complex wounds. The text begins with the superficial anatomy of the skin, fundamental wound care and reconstructive principles. Photo series and legend decriptions document healing for a variety of different size wounds, tissue heterogeneity (tendon, cartilage, and bone), and in critical/non-critical sites. Examples of the recognition and management of surgical complications are included within each chapter. Calibrated, logical protocols for open wound healing, flaps and graphs are offered. The Appendix presents Medicare issues, antibiotic coverage, and a 10-step guide for skin graphs. It also provides a list of products and costs. Finally, the book includes a CD with additional color digital photos and two videos on harvesting a STSG.
