This autobiography recounts a twenty-year quest to experience an authentic faith in God. It wrestles conventional spirituality in ways previously unimagined, beginning with the biblical account of Jesus cursing a fig tree and the power this obscure image held in the author's mind. The quest spans college years at America's top evangelical college, his rejection of Christianity, a flight to Kodiak, hallucinogenic drugs, and a crazy motorcycle trip back to Alaska during the winter. There he meets a seventeen year old hippie girl reading Zelda Fitzgerald and they wonder together if they can fall in love like Zelda and Scott and beat madness. After an unlikely two-year courtship, they marry, and become Baptist Christians. They then return to "the lower 48," jumping full force into the Nashville music industry, and experience the break-up of a twelve-year marriage as all goes bust -- and finally, a revisiting from the curse of the fig tree story with fresh meaning and a hidden revelation.

From the Author:

I wrote this book after I was fired from The Upper Room, a Christian devotional publisher, due to political shifts in the organization which caught me by surprise.  Shortly after that, my wife asked me for a separation, while our children were ages 9 and 11.  This too caught me by surprise.  Unemployed, alone, renting a small apartment in an old house, at age 39, I didn't even have a car.
I spent my time mostly alone and began to write letters to people from my life, making a kind of amends, a peace of sorts.  My first letter was to my older brother , telling him of how he had influenced me to question the status quo, as he represented the older (by 4 years) "hippie generation" who graduated from high school in 1972.  I emailed this letter to a friend of mine who was a graduate of Vanderbilt University with a degree in English lit.  She wrote that she enjoyed reading it.  So, I wrote more letters: to my grandfather who was born in rural Nebraska in 1900 and whom I had a close relationship to.  I wrote to my college roommate and to my best friend who lived in Arvada, Colorado, also steeped in the evangelical subculture.  After college, I moved to Alaska and began a journey from there, seeking my own sort of answers, similar to the kid in the book "Into the Wild."  I lived in Seattle for 8 months, working as a dishwasher and I wrote letters to a kid I knew there who ended up killing himself by jumping off of a bridge.  I drove an old motorcycle back to Alaska in early April, 1982, and wrote letters about that, finally meeting my wife-to-be in Anchorage when she was 17 and I was 24.     Each letter I wrote, I sent to my Vanderbilt English major friend and she was captivated by the story, she said.  I finished the manuscript in 1998 and put it away on a computer disk.  I dusted it off in 2006 and published it to Lulu.com.     It's a story about someone who took the Christian message seriously and lived the consequences of a radical mind-set.  The terrible consequences caused great contrast in my life.  In the end, I lost the desire to live.  Suddenly, this all shifted for me.  These changes resulted in a more positive outlook reaching into my actual life-experience.  So, I wanted to document this change and a revelation.  It centered around a passage in the New Testament where Jesus curses a fig tree, a parable which affected me greatly.  In the end of my story, I make peace with the idea that Jesus would curse a tree.  Thus, the story has a beginning, a middle and an end.     I hope you enjoy it.  I've had lots of wonderful feedback, but have done almost nothing to promote it other than posting it to Lulu.com.  It's all true and quite fantastic the way it all happened and today in 2014, I feel great gratitude for every step along the way.S.W.W.

About the Author:

Scott W. Webb graduated from Wheaton College, Chicago, 1981 with a degree in philosophy. He is the father of two grown children, Art and Maddie, and grandfather to two, Kaden and Hannah. He worked for the Anchorage Daily News in Alaska for seven years before moving to Nashville, Tennessee in 1990 after his wife signed a developing artist deal with Star Song Communications and then with Curb Music. In 2000, he became interested in "health and wellness" and opened a private colon hydrotherapy office in 2001, where he is in his 14th year. In 2006, he wrote the book, "Inside Poop," about his experiences and learnings as a colon hygienist, which has a nearly five star rating on Amazon for the print version. He has authored other books on a wide variety of topics and been published in ACRES USA and Massage magazine."A Curse, My Blessing" covers Mr. Webb's journey through the evangelical subculture from age 16 to age 40.  These experiences include Teen Missions Inc. youth missionary trips to Alaska (1974) and the island of Dominica (1975), attending two Christian colleges (Bethel in St. Paul, MN and Wheaton in Chicago), leaving Christianity, then returning after his marriage to a Christian developing artist with a move to Nashville, TN.  This book was written after working four years for The Upper Room devotional publishing offices as Magazine Marketing Director and a "rethinking" of his faith.
