For nine-year-old Billy, becoming a superhero is not going to be easy.

Becoming a Superhero takes readers (8 - 12) back to World War 11 and its aftermath, as they look inside the life of Billy Smith, a 10-year-old living in a Pennsylvania coal mining town. Billy decides he wants to become an American superhero, yet the choices he makes often have disastrous consequences.

The story is a tale of morals and values. A first-person narrative of a young boy, caught between the innocence of childhood and the responsibilities of growing up. Each page is like having Grandpa tell stories of what life was like growing up "in the olden days."

The story is semi-autobiographical, based on published poems of my childhood. I am currently a college instructor teaching psychology and education courses at Ocean County College in New Jersey.

From the Publisher:

Outskirts Press is pleased to announce the publication of Becoming A Superhero by New Jersey resident, William D. Smith. In his tale the author tells the story of young Billy, a boy who wants to grow up to be a superhero.

Billy's world is filled with heroes, real heroes returning from the war, as well as those that spring from his vivid imagination. So no one was suprised when he announced his intention to become an American Superhero, just like the ones in comic books.

In spite of a noble goal to rid the world of evil, the choices Billy makes along the way often have disastrous consequences and land him in trouble time and time again.

As I climbed up onto what was left of the window ledge, a voice penetrated my thoughts, louder than an airplane engine, saying "Birds fly; kids don't." But I wasn't afraid. I had a magic Superman cape and I was going to be a superhero. I jumpeed. It was the fastest and shortest flight in recorded history. I hit the dirt like a speeding bullet. That's a Superman joke, which wasn't very funny at that particular moment. Somehow, I managed to crawl home, crying all the way...

Becoming A Superhero is a tale of morals and values that shows, firsthand, what it is like to be caught between the innocence of childhood and the looming responsibilities of an adult world.

From the Author:

Join me in the celebration of my first children's novel: "Becoming A Superhero" I captured yesterday. Along with all the yesterdays filled with the choices and challenges of growing up.

While Sally, Dick and Jane were watching Spot run, Billy Smith age 10, decided to become an American superhero. His fun-packed adventuree begins in the town dump by collecting junk to build a battleshop and end the war.

Join in on a fun-packed roller coaster ride of first experiences. Billy's first fight. First school dance. First summer at camp. Oh yes, this teacher of almost fifty years, was first on his principal's retention list.
