9781432749101: The Davidic Cipher: Unlocking the Music of the Psalms

Hear the Bible in a Whole New Way - Through Music

The word “psalm” means, literally, a sacred melody. But what exactly would this music sound like in biblical times? Years in the making, The Davidic Cipher finally unlocks the hidden music of the Psalms, enabling these timeless works to be deciphered and written into traditional musical notation.
Presented in a non-denominational setting, The Davidic Cipher uncovers the underlying links between the words of the Bible, the Hebrew alphabet, the musical instruments of the Psalms, the name of God, and the musical system of our day. Recently seen on the History Channel, this breakthrough work opens up a new understanding and appreciation of the Bible and its music.
* Where did the musical system of King David’s time originate?
* What are the Psalms, who wrote them, and how did they sound?
* What musical function do the Psalm superscriptions and the Hallelujah have?
* How did the Psalmists secretly encode the name of God within the melodies as a form of praise?
* What did the musical instruments of the Psalms look like, how were they tuned, and how were they used to play the music of the Bible?
Scholarly yet accessible to the lay reader, The Davidic Cipher unleashes a wealth of musical and vocal literature that has been hidden within the pages of the Bible for centuries. And it’s required reading for anyone looking to enrich and enhance their understanding of the Bible and the glorious Psalms.

From the Author:

The Davidic Cipher-Unlocking the Hidden Music of the Psalms is only the start of a much larger work that will hopefully be carried on by other individuals. Some will no doubt disagree on the level of the importance and relevance of the information presented herein. Still, these findings should open new dialogues in various disciplines that will not only enrich our understanding of music, but of this great book we call the Bible.

For the musician, the resulting transcriptions of the Psalms provide an untapped resource of new musical literature. These are new musical compositions to be studied and analyzed, arranged and performed. For the theologian, the Davidic Cipher provides a new tool for biblical exegesis and research enabling a more accurate view and format of these works, which in turn will yield better translations and understandings of the texts. Even from a strict literary viewpoint, the application of the Davidic Cipher reveals much of the poetic aspect of the Hebrew lost in tradition and most certainly in translation.

To the average person who reads the Bible, insights into not only the ancient music and instruments, but also into some of the relationships that exist between language, music and the Bible and God can now be seen more clearly.

About the Author:

Dennis McCorkle, author, composer, musician, and teacher, has been an underlying force in the music and publishing industry for over thirty years. It was during the time of the Vietnam conflict that he auditioned for and was accepted as a guitarist in the United States Navy Band. Relocating from his last duty station in Naples, Italy to Washington, DC, he attended American University and performed regularly in the area. Mr. McCorkle's teachers included the prominent educators: Frank Mullen, John Marlow, "protégé of Segovia," and Dennis Sandole, with whom the legendary John Coltrane, Art Farmer, James Moody, and Pat Martino also studied. Moving back to New Jersey in the 1970s, Mr. McCorkle taught music theory, harmony, and applied music at Atlantic Community College and published his first book, Basic Method for Guitar.

Along with his teaching and performing, McCorkle started a small recording studio devoted to songwriters, the Demo Shack. With the advent of the casino gaming industry in Atlantic City, he expanded his business by opening the first full-service recording facility in the area. Recording headliners, businesses, and local talent, his studio and producing became the benchmark for recording in the area. During the economic downturn during the post Vietnam war period, he closed his studio and took a position with Music Minus One in New York as a producer/mastering engineer and was eventually offered a position with them as Executive Director.

Leaving Music Minus One/Pocket Songs in the 1990s, Mr. McCorkle accepted a position with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York City as Assistant Director of Information Services. It was during his time with the Authority that the President of the United States ceremonial marching band in Grand Central Terminal premiered his composition, "The Grand Central March," on July 5 2000, becoming the official march of Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

Along with his musical endeavors, the search for religious truth has been an ever-present motivation throughout his life. His harmonization of the Gospels, The Book of Jesus, has become a widely-recognized reference work by educators and theologians alike. Throughout his life, Mr. McCorkle has written and recorded over one hundred compositions for guitar, voice, and orchestra, numerous music related books and publications, and The Kings-a contemporary pop-rock musical about the lives of the first two kings of Israel, Saul and David.

During the ten years in which the information for, The Davidic Cipher, was researched and compiled, much previously misunderstood information about the inner workings of the Levite musical order and the music of the Psalms has been uncovered. His cutting-edge methodology into the music of the Psalms, recently included in the History Channel's presentation, The Naked Archeologist-In Search of King David's Harp, opens up a new understanding and appreciation of the Bible and the music it contains.

Mr. McCorkle presently resides in West Hartford, Connecticut where he continues to pursue his biblical research, teaching, performing and being a grandfather.
