9781432773106: Ordinary Valor: How Cancer Saved My Life--Not Once, But Twice

AN ORDINARY MAN'S EXTRAORDINARY TALE OF COURAGE AND THE WILL TO LIVE

Ordinary Valor is not a textbook about cancer or the psychology of coping, although you'll find author Dr. Robert Mignone's thoughts on both. It's not a philosophical discourse about faith or the existence of God, although Dr. Mignone talks a lot about his source of resilience coming from the power of love and a strong faith. He also makes clear that humor has a place in keeping perspective. Rather, Ordinary Valor invites the reader join and witness his journey of coping with the dark reality of cancer and the Great Mystery. Mignone writes:

Because my story has been ordinary, I've come to regard my experience as remarkable--even spectacular--because I've seen first- hand how it has reflected the marvelous journeys of gazillions of traumatized men and women reeling from crises while they still worked and loved and managed their lives as best they could--and with only their intimates knowing anything of their heartaches. What courage. That's the human grit which more than ever brings tears of admiration to my eyes. Celebrities or even unsung heroes may be entertaining and sometimes inspirational, but even more awesome is Everyman's bouncing back. To me, they're the all heroes and heroines.

About the author

Dr. Mignone attended Amherst College, cum laude, and Duke Medical School, Alpha Omega Alpha. Then followed internal medicine internship at Yale,; neurology residencies at Cornell-New York Hospital and the N.I.H.; and psychiatric residency/chief residency, Mass. General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

He relocated to Southwest Florida in 1990 to establish a multi-specialty mental health group with a mind/body/spirit perspective.

His interests include--besides general psychiatry--forensics, stress medicine, adjustment counseling, medical ethics, spirituality and medicine, and care of advanced medical illness. He is an Ordained minister. He is a physician broadcaster. Again in 2010, for the seventh consecutive year, Dr. Mignone was selected as Top Psychiatrist in Southwest Florida by Castle Connolly research group using peer preferences, curriculum vita, experience, and community profile. The distinction appeared each year in their annual national publication of top specialists--as well as in Sarasota Magazine's annual issue of Top Docs.
