From the Author:

Surviving Mental Illness, My Story is my memoir about the experiences I faced growing up with a mental illness, in particular, bipolar disorder and how I struggled to make my way back towards mental health and recovery.  It took me about a year and a half to write this book and my experience in writing it was therapeutic in a way, but it also brought back a lot of traumas in my life that I had to overcome.  I published another book titled Peter and Lisa: A Mental Illness Children's Story which is also published by Outskirts Press.  It is different than this book because it is written for children and shows how they can be challenged too by a member in their family who has mental illness.

About the Author:

Linda Naomi Katz, born on March 21, 1969, was raised in the Jewish faith by both parents who sent her to Yeshiva, a modern orthodox day school, where she could learn the roots of Orthodox Judaism. When she was 10 years old, her mother suffered from a nervous breakdown and was diagnosed with acute depression, which caused a lot of problems in within her family. Because of this, Linda's time growing up into adulthood was not an easy one. She was often depressed and had difficulty making friends, developing positive relationships, and getting a job.  At the age of 24, Linda also developed a mental illness and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.  Being a modern Orthodox woman, she discovered how biased and stigmatized the Jewish community was towards her. Her social life was emptied and was isolated from everyone because of her mental illness. It was not until she became a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) that she started to change. She realized that she may have to develop relationships within the mental health community and so she joined the Friendship Network. NAMI helped her a great deal and eventually met someone with also a mental illness, who is her husband until today.  In conclusion, Linda never lost her faith in God and Judaism and therefore, never stopped trying to overcome her obstacles in life and find the way back to recovery.
