Peak Season for Murder was inspired by a journalist/friend and a newspaper article. Robert Davis, a former ChicagoTribune metro editor, and I worked at the University of Illinois at Chicago teaching nonfiction writing. Bob, who knew I was writing a mystery series set in Door County, Wisconsin, told me about an article he'd written about a theater group in Door County. "Those people really know how to party," he said. "You should put them in one of your mysteries." Because I'm writing a four-part seasonal mystery, it wasn't until I began writing the summer book that I took Bob's advice. The other inspiration for Peak Season for Murder came from an article I read years ago about these two homeless men who got their lives back on track by squatting on some land along the Ohio River in the Columbus, Ohio area. They built a shed, cleaned up the land, and ran off the drug dealers. As a show of gratitude to the men, a local conservancy group allowed them to stay on the land until it's developed. I took that story and moved it to Door County. As the book opens, one of those men has been murdered. One of the core mysteries of the book is whether there is a connection between the murdered homeless man and the deadly events at the theater? From the Back Cover:
"I loved it! Peak Season for Murder is mystery and suspense at its peak. Gail Lukasik has written a smart, literate page-turner and gives us the best kind of protagonist in newspaperwoman Leigh Girard--strong, flawed, and someone you definitely want to meet up with again and again!" --Molly MacRae, author of the Haunted Yarn Shop Mysteries
