Washington, D.C., police detective Kevin McClain was tortured in Somalia years ago as an airborne ranger. He’s troubled when those memories resurface as he investigates the mutilation and incineration of a homeless man. Meanwhile, the presidential election is looming. FBI agent Felicia Knight is investigating a terrorist cell that intelligence officials feel could launch a deadly sarin gas attack in the D.C. area. The difficulty is to take down the terrorists before the attack but after they expose the group command hierarchy. McClain comes to realize that the dead homeless man is the key to the potential terrorist attack and forms a partnership with Knight, but they can’t connect the dots. Author Black is a former police officer and author of 19 novels, including the popular Ron Shade mysteries. He piles on plenty of genre staples here—tough cop, beautiful FBI agent, creepy politicians, conspiracies, and even an annoyingly plucky investigative reporter—so much so that, in the wrong hands, the book could have been a 15-layer cliché cake. Instead, it’s a fine crime novel, thanks to Black’s sharply drawn characters and unexpected plot twists. --Wes Lukowsky
