"Synopsis: Ethan Kerry, blinded by a wild horse, continues to run his growing Texas ranch--with the help of his two brothers, Cole and Luther, and his strong wife, Claire. Notorious outlaw Glory Van Camp, posing as a fake Uvalde minister, and his brother, appearing to be a town bum, have their sights set on taking control of the massive Bar K. They are joined by their evil stepfather, Heredith Tiorgs, and stepsister, Jinette Six, and recruited gunmen. Their first target is Cole Kerry, the youngest brother and a gunfighter of note. As interim town marshal, Cole Kerry is shot down in a town crossfire and nearly dead, but is saved by two friends, an Irishman and a Chinaman. Unknown to anyone outside of the family, Ethan has regained his sight as the torn nerve endings in his eyes healed. The old courageous leader returns and leads his men in a smart counterattack. He figures out who is really behind the effort and has the fake minister arrested. The town is in an uproar until Ethan proves who he really is. Jinette Six surprises everyone and escapes with Glory Van Camp and her father. Ethan takes Cole's big sorrel, the horse that blinded him, to go after them alone"--

About the Author:

Cotton Smith, a protege of renowned Western writer Don Coldsmith, was a 1998 Spur Award nominee for his debut novel and a 2009 nominee for best short fiction. Smith graduated from the University of Kansas. Often sought as a speaker, he has given speeches, presentations and seminars to associations, companies and book lovers throughout the country. Currently, he serves on the Heart of America Council Executive Board and was the Presiding Chieftain of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, an honor Scouting society. He is a horseman, a past president of the Saddle & Sirloin Club of Kansas City, past Captain of the Outriders, trail-riding group, past Co-Chairman of the Kansas City Rodeo, a member of the Desert Caballeros, and past president of the Western Writers of America.

From Booklist:

Smith continues his intermittent series about the South Texas Kerry clan, headed by the blind Ethan Kerry (Behold a Red Horse, 2001). The Bar K is threatened with a band of rustlers run by an obsessive-compulsive psychopath named Glory Van Camp, who masks as a circuit-riding preacher given to quoting Tennyson as well as the Bible. When the Kerrys bring in several rustlers to stand trial, Van Camp engineers their murder to keep them from talking. He kills the sheriff, too. Ethan’s younger brother, Cole, becomes sheriff and guns down several rustlers before he himself is shot, and Ethan must join the fray. Van Camp makes a fine villain, and Cole is affecting in his grief for his dead wife. Smith’s appreciation for horses, including the magnificent animal that caused Ethan’s blindness, is well done. Smith also sets up ambushes beautifully and tells you how to follow a trail. Sometimes, he veers toward the maudlin, as when the grieving Cole befriends a grounded chickadee, but nonetheless Sorrel Moon is a satisfying tale. --John Mort
