This quick entry in the Comparing Past and Present series uses historical and modern photographs to turn each two-page spread into a visual comparison of the bad ol’ days and the glimmering futuristic present. The text, limited to a sentence positioned low on the page, contributes the bare minimum: Cooking has changed over time. The way people cook today is very different from the past. There is therefore little chance of deeper understanding of the ways of the past. But that’s all right, because the pictures alone are enough to surprise young readers about the relative privilege of modern conveniences. Sepia-toned shots of weary women cooking outdoors, using wood-burning ovens, pumping well water, and so forth are contrasted with bright shots of (mostly) women beaming within their efficient, cheery kitchens. An eye-opener, for sure. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Daniel Kraus
