About the Author:

The first in his family to go to college, Donald J. Foss, PhD, attended Hamline University and then transferred to the University of Minnesota, where he received both a bachelor s degree and a doctorate. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard, he joined The University of Texas at Austin, rising to be a professor of psychology and the chair of the psychology department. Dr. Foss has also been on the psychology faculty at Florida State University, where he was dean of its College of Arts and Sciences. Presently, he is a professor of psychology at the University of Houston, where he also has served as senior vice president for academic affairs and as provost.

Dr. Foss enjoys teaching and interacting with students. He received an All-University Outstanding Teaching Award from The University of Texas at Austin and an Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota. His research interests are in cognitive psychology, specializing in how people comprehend both spoken and written language. He has published numerous professional articles and book chapters and has cowritten or coedited seven books. More recently, he turned his attention to the factors that determine success in college. The evidence-based book in front of you is one result of that interest. It provides college students with the best current information and insights on how to succeed in college (and after).

Review:

"If you know of a young person heading off to college, do him or her a huge favor and give this book as a gift. Foss writes gracefully about the many challenges facing the first-year college student (many of them unlike high school challenges). He presents sensible advice based on research and on the wisdom that he and his colleagues have gathered during many years in university education. This volume is the perfect high school graduation gift for the college-bound student."
--Henry L. Roediger, III, James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor, Washington University in St. Louis

"This book provides a recipe for collegiate success. Traditional students, as well as nontraditional students attending urban, nonresidential universities, will benefit greatly from the empirically supported formulae for academic success. Faculty searching for the perfect freshman-level readiness course textbook need look no further; readings, self-assessments, and learning application activities are all included in this conversational yet evidence-based read."
--Cindy Stewart, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology, University of Houston Downtown, Texas

"In an imaginative approach to thinking about college life, Foss has provided one of the most useful guides I ve ever had the pleasure of reading. College students who may be generally happy, but full of concerns about college life, will finally have some real guidance.
Grounded in evidence, not mere opinion, Your Complete Guide to College Success exposes some major myths about what it takes to succeed and leaves its readers with a far better understanding of the big picture of the college experience."
-- Elizabeth F. Loftus, PhD, Distinguished Professor, University of California, Irvine, Past President, Association for Psychological Science

"Wise and warm and brilliantly insightful, Foss s guide is essential to any thoughtful student s preparation for college. My only regret is that Dr. Foss didn t write this book when I was first heading off to school How much better I might have done and with how much less stress!"
--Robert Olen Butler, Pulitzer Prize laureate and Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor, Florida State University, Tallahassee

Your Complete Guide to College Success: How to Study Smart, Achieve Your Goals, and Enjoy Campus Life is an absolute must-have for any college-bound adult. Chapters teach the basics of time management, strategic reading, preparing for tests, meet the challenge of mathematics courses, common pitfalls to avoid in campus life, and much more. "I recommend that you pick your exercise with the long term in mind. Look around; no one plays football after age 30 unless they are paid enormous sums of money to do so - and then they can't walk a few years later... consider using your university recreation center to learn or improve a lifetime sport - tennis, handball, squash, hiking or jogging, mountain biking, etc. Lessons are usually free or very inexpensive." A practical, no-nonsense resource that backs up its advice with a wealth of references, Your Complete Guide to College Success is enthusiastically recommended especially as a gift to aspiring high school graduates! --Midwest Book Review
