9781434445681: Amen's Boy: A Fictionalized Autobiography

Ripped from today's headlines, and based on the scandalously true story, Amen's Boy tells the tale of a young man who decides to become a Catholic priest. But before he can graduate from the seminary, he must preserve his youthful innocence from the physical, mental, and sexual abuse of...a sadistic father, a violent brother, a molesting classmate, and a secret cabal of priests hiding within the very framework of Mother Church herself. In the end, Jacob Campbell can only maintain his core self through what may be an actual epiphany, including visitations by angels and heavenly hosts--or possibly drug-induced self-delusions conjured up by exposure to hallucinogens and prescription pills. A riveting, terrifying, moving, and ultimately redeeming visit to seminary hell--and back again!

From the Author:

In all of the over 200 books I've had published, I can count upon the fingers of one hand the number of times I've ventured into fictionalized autobiographies that entail working with someone else. I did it in DIARY OF A HUSTLER (with Joey), SLOVAKIAN BOY (with Pavel), and, again, in ARDENNIAN BOY (written with Professor Wayne Gunn, about the relationship between French poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine). They're not easy books for me to write, if just because, fictionalized, or not, they're based upon fact, and that can often be constricting in a writing process wherein I usually prefer to allow the muse to take me wherever it will.          In the case of teaming up with Jacob Campbell for AMEN'S BOY, it was a collaboration to which I was persuaded to agree because I thought, what with the recent gamut of headlines not only proclaiming abuse in families and in schools but sexual abuse within the Catholic Church, that a story based upon the actual happenings of my co-author's life (having been affected by all three) was a story to be told, and to be read by as many people as possible, whether or not the names were changed to protect the innocent. And since Jacob pretty much had the initial manuscript written, as his own form of personal catharsis, requiring me just mainly to step in and provide the guidelines by which he could tighten the story-line and tweak it for better presentation, I eagerly embraced the project and ushered the book into publication via traditional mainstream publisher Wildside/Borgo Press.          For those of us who have never suffered abuse (sexual or physical), it's sometimes hard to realize that such disturbing activities actually do happen within the reality. That we aren't exposed to hearing more of them is often because of the existent shame and embarrassment endured by the victims who would, more often than not, prefer to keep it all hidden, even if keeping it hidden can cause psychological repercussions that may only manifest themselves years after the fact; one reason why so many stories of abuse occur in childhood but only see the light of day when the victims have long been adults.          Never one to veer away from controversy, and realizing that this book is and will be considered controversial, I still think that it has a lot to say about the state of society and the abuse of innocence which can occur within in it, and, sadly enough, does, on a regular basis. I truly believe, as does Jacob, that the more light that be shed upon these horrendous occurrences, that are so often kept in the dark, the better are the chances for preventing more of the same in the future. Especially since these sins are so often committed upon vulnerable children by people who masquerade as saints and sympathetic figures of authority while corrupting innocence.

From the Inside Flap:

DEDICATION to Benny and to the memory of Jean Genet, whose Mettray Reformatory -- in this novel THE MIRACLE OF THE ROSE -- provides literary echoes that astute readers will recognize as reverberating within our Mettray Seminary, found here.
