9781438913995: The Little Black Fish

"The Little Black Fish" is the work of Samad Beh-Rang (Behrangi), a writer from Azerbaijan-Iran. The Little Black Fish, unhappy with a life without any aspiration or purpose, embarks on an eye-opening journey with the spirit of a dreamer experiencing an awakening and the prospects of the deeds he would perform, but in the process he does more than that. The path leads him to wisdom, courage, awareness and study of complex social relations. The actions of small fish thinking pathetically only about their lives, and those of The Little Black Fish saving the tiny fish before saving himself are remarkable manifestations of human behavior when their actions are put to test.
The story of The Little Black Fish is a revelation not just an experience. It is about stepping outside the confides of a self-centered life, drawing a distinction between the wandering and the stationary. It has a pedagogic value with numerous underlying political messages and shows a path to freedom, equality and justice, with a simple analogy for the younger readers to understand. The goal of The Little Black Fish is to fulfill his ultimate quest: "How will my life or death impact the lives of others?"
Once he has identified the problem he sets a goal to look for solutions. From this point on the path is carefully laid-out as he moves on: making connections, assuming leadership, planning, fulfilling the plan and continuing the quest until the goal has been reached.

From the Author:

This is a classic in child literature. On the one hand the story is a beautiful tale where the reality is mixed with fiction. It tells an enlightening legend about a Little Black Fish who encounters the strange, narrow-minded world of grown-ups, most of which signify some futile aspect of adult existence. A dogmatic way of life filled with ignorance and the fear of the unknown, remained unchanged throughout generations, is the reason behind our hero's wish to travel far and find out about life in other parts of the world.

After long discussions with the community members who try to convince him to succumb to their static lifestyle and are willing to destroy him when they see their way of life under attack, he finally leaves in search of a better life. Along the way The Little Black Fish interacts with frogs, small fish and the moon. He also has brave encounters with a crab, a pelican and a swordfish. A wise lizard gives him lots of advice, encourages him to follow his quest, make connections and look for the team of fishes that have come together and formed a strong alliance to defend themselves when in danger.

For children: beautiful, interesting and lovely tale about a little black fish who wants to learn about life and look for answers. For progressive adults: short, well-written and edifying story about themselves and a path they can follow to achieve the goals of freedom and justice.

Seldom do we find in literature a work with so many well-elaborated facets. A novel which is also richly adorned with history, politics, character studies while addressing deep philosophical, political and social issues.

Although ostensibly a children's book, The Little Black Fish makes countless profound and realistic points about life and human nature. In this story we can see the painful truth about ourselves. The plot is not complicated because the most important message there is the question "what is the real essence of our life?

The essence of the book is contained in the great and famous lines uttered by the Little Black Fish when thinking about his accomplishments: "I might face death any minute now, but I should not put myself in harms' way as long as I can live. Of course, it is not important if I die, because this is going to happen anyway. I know my purpose: How will my life or death impact the lives of others?"

About the Author:

Besides teaching in remote villages and collecting epic and folk tales of Azerbaijan that
had been passed along through generations by oral tradition, Beh-Rang (Behrangi) wrote stories for children and articles on education. The nature of his writings with their metaphoric allusions to dictatorship and a yearning to equality, freedom and justice, have shed light on countless political and socio-economic problems, making them universal.

In his works Beh-Rang has addressed such problems as poverty, ignorance, discrimination, injustice and lack of freedom. Today, these topics are subjects of many books and movies, yet very few among them offer any solutions to those problems.

Beh-Rang's works shape the lives of people who read them. In an effort to help end social injustice, he does not shield his young readers from learning about realities of life. The Little Black Fish follows a path in his journey to the sea and teaches the readers that no matter how hard the road or how high the stakes, their goals are attainable.

In this book younger readers learn how to deal with such issues as bullying, discrimination, violence and other day-to-day problems, they are encouraged to move on and make connections with the right group of individuals in an effort to face those issues collectively. Progressive adult readers however, see a clear path to freedom and justice.
