From the Back Cover:

Prologue: The First Day of School, Observations from Vic the Maintenance Guy

"I've got my feet in two worlds here at the Archimedes School. I'm a parent of a kid who goes here, and I work in the maintenance department to keep this place ship shape. There are moments I get pretty sick of being treated like shit by some of these overly entitled parents--I'm just as much a parent at this school as they are, but being one of the many parents who work here, especially since I wear blue overalls and construction boots, I'm just a lower life-form to many of these moms. Most of `em treat me like I'm invisible. On the other hand, Thank God I'm not playing their games! If their husbands heard one-tenth of what I hear everyday. In the eleven years I've been here I've overheard hundreds of stories, stuff you think only exists in movies and books. There's wife swapping parties, women who discretely take their "boy toys" with them on $20,000 dollar shopping excursions to New York, and pre-nups that dictate the frequency and type of sexual acts required weekly--these are especially popular with mega rich seventy year olds who marry beautiful young women. I knew about one stunning mom who had a long standing affair with an ancient English rock star--he had more wrinkles than a bull dog, but with all that money and fame, he was still a babe magnet. He'd fly her anywhere on his private jet. Her husband thought she was attending yoga retreats in Arizona, until he found her passport which had been stamped in twenty different countries. Of course, there's the normal stuff about moms having affairs with their ob-gyns or plastic surgeons, dads hitting on underage baby sitters, drug and food addictions where parents have to be discretely sent away, embezzlement, bribery, and in one case, jail time for a mom whose preferences for designer clothing exceeded the size of her wallet. Just another day in the life of the Archimedes School. I'm sure this stuff happens in all private schools. When I get home from work, I put my feet up, crack open a beer and have a good long laugh at the whole damn thing. A very good laugh, everyday. It's never boring for me, the invisible man."

"I can never leave this job. Sure, the school's got its share of bitchy snobs, but there are also some good people here--both parents and staff. When my wife Jeanne died they kept me alive, kept me going. My kid's been here for eleven years now, surviving an education among the over-privileged. Rob's smart and has a much better shot at life with this kind of education at Archimedes, the whole accelerated math thing, maybe even the connections with these people. I could never work anywhere else and raise a son on my own. Nine years now since she's passed, Jeanne liked him being at this school, she would have wanted him here. The guys here kept me going, the good ones did; they gave me a reason to get out of bed when it happened. This place is family for my boy. I don't know how I would have gotten through everything without these people. It probably wouldn't have been my first choice, but now we're lifers at this place."

"No one would last more than a week in this job if it weren't for our maintenance supervisor. Everything we do must be cleared through hi

About the Author:

In her former life, Julie Heath wore obligatory conservative business suits and deftly climbed the broadcasting corporate ladder for twenty years. She was the founding partner of a successful national radio consulting firm, where eighty hour work weeks seriously impacted any contact with people beyond broadcasters. She has published two previous books (nothing that would interest anyone outside of radio) and was a frequent contributor to several industry trade publications. In her current life, Julie lives in Annapolis with her son and is fulfilling the job of being a private school mom-carefully balancing a life of meaningful simplicity while striving to create the illusion of being a "hot mom."
