Trapped in the Scottish wilds with Jamie and his men, she tries to unravel a tangled mystery around the source of the feud: the unsolved murder of Jamie's parents. Readers will enjoy the appealing, self-reliant heroine and her efforts to avoid her marriage, find the man of her dreams, and take care of her parents and three younger sisters. Quick-paced, clever dialogue lightly sprinkled with Scottish slang moves things along almost too quickly toward a somewhat rushed conclusion.

Despite its lavishness, her wedding isn’t that important to her given that she is sacrificing herself to a wealthy, old, decrepit earl to pay off her father’s gambling debts. Jamie Sinclair is demanding a ransom for her return, but Emmaline’s capture is more about family honor and the centuries-long feud between the Sinclairs and the Hepburns. As Jamie and Emmaline navigate treacherous mountainous slopes, she begins to realize that this particular bad guy is really a good guy, one whose courage and honor instill loyalty in his ragtag band of men. Once safe in his grandfather’s crumbling castle, Jamie has to decide whether to continue his quest for revenge, or keep the woman he has grown to love at his side. Medeiros is a superb storyteller. Both primary and secondary characters are vividly three-dimensional; her plot is full of tasty twists, and Medeiros can pull every last emotion from the reader with tear-inducing scenes and laugh-out-loud dialogue. --Shelley Mosley
