9781439220528: Rosemount

When Leslie Cahill, a rancher's daughter, learns that her father plans to enroll her in Rosemount Academy, an exclusive girls' school in the city, she puts up every resistance she can muster. She doesn't understand the motivation behind his decision and feels rejected. Leslie loves her home, her life. Her greatest joy is riding her Appaloosa mare, Polly, over Eastern Washington's rolling hills. Leslie fails to change her father's mind and resorts to a more drastic plan. As a runaway, Leslie finds herself in Eastern Oregon's wilderness and its sprawling ranch country. She is unprepared for the trials that beset her - harsh land that presents frightening challenges and people who take advantage of her vulnerability. Along the way she also discovers kindness among strangers who help her find strength within herself to survive.

About the Author:

Mary E. Trimble lives on Camano Island, Washington with her husband. A prolific writer, Trimble draws on personal experiences including purser and ship's diver aboard the tall ship, M.S. Explorer; Peace Corps in West Africa; a 13,000- mile South Pacific sailing adventure aboard their Bristol 40, Impunity and extensive overland RV trips. Trimble is active with the American Red Cross and has responded to several local and national disasters. Mary Trimble's 400-plus travel articles and articles of interest to homeowners have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers.

Trimble's first novel, ROSEMOUNT, has received wide acclaim. It's sequel, McCLELLAN'S BLUFF, is a recipient of the EPIC (Electronically Published Internet Connection) Award as Best Young Adult Novel. Both Coming-of-Age stories are of interest to teens as well as adults.

Review:

Rosemount is a superbly written tale of one young woman's trip from childhood to maturity, set in the exquisite--and exquisitely described--farm and ranch country of the Pacific Northwest. Teens who feel no one listens to them will likely identify easily with Leslie, while adults can also learn from not only her plight but that of her father and brother. This is a book that should be on every school's recommended-reading list and every teen's bookshelf. --Elizabeth Burton - Blue Iris Cafe
