Review:

In his long but surprisingly engrossing novel about rebuilding lives after traumatic loss, Gibson brings a small Colorado town to life without sentimentality or condescension. Five years ago, Larry Perkins died in a fluke accident. As members of his family labor individually to move beyond their grief, they have trouble sharing their struggles with each other. There are no villains here but plenty of emotional mistakes. Larry's father Axel, retired from his municipal accounting job, spends his days in self-imposed solitude. Axel's wife Honey pours her unused energy and affection into volunteer work at the local museum but her loneliness is palpable. Larry's widow Liv keeps her deepening relationship with a caring high school teacher a secret in fear of hurting her in-laws' feelings. Ten-year old Simon, who barely remembers his father, forms an unlikely, potentially dangerous friendship with an unhappy teenage girl. At the novel's center is Larry's brother Gordon, who spent much of his life in Larry's shadow. As the novel opens, Gordon, who runs a local resort, has fallen in love with a much-younger man, Brent. Living in a conservative town, both are in the closet, and when Brent returns to college, Gordon assumes he will be alone. But he becomes increasingly involved with a former classmate, embracing the role as father figure to her little girl. He persists in his decision to marry even after realizing that his family accepts his sexual orientation--and despite the attraction he shares with the new (male) accountant in town whom Honey has befriended. Meanwhile when Liv tells the family she is pregnant, her in-laws couldn't be more supportive. While the main plot swirls around the Perkins family, Gibson populates the novel with engrossing subplots--including the heartbreaking story of a little boy befriended by a retired teacher, Brent's disastrous coming out to his twin Gareth and Gareth's unlikely romance. There is nothing cutesy or quirky about these characters, yet their nuanced decency is undeniably powerful. These stories will imprint indelibly into the reader's consciousness. --Kirkus Discoveries
