It is not an exhaustive treatise on the Atonement or on Justification: it is an examination of the New Testament teaching on the Death of Christ. That the death of Christ has a place in the New Testament which demands for it the most careful consideration will not be questioned by any one; and though the ground has often been traversed, in whole or in part, before, there are reasons which justify at the present time such a study as follows. One is that, so far as the writer can judge, the death of Christ has not the place assigned to it, either in preaching or in theology, which it has in the New Testament.
