Excerpt from An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Natural Knowledge
Modern speculative physics with its revolutionary theories concerning the natures of matter and of electricity has made urgent the question, What are the ultimate data of science? It is in accordance with the nature Of things that mankind should find itself acting and should then proceed to discuss the rationale of its activities. Thus the creation of science precedes the analysis of its data and can even be accompanied by the acceptance of faulty analyses, though such errors end by warping scientific imagination.

Originally published in 1919, and first republished in 1925 as this Second Edition, this text ranks among Whitehead's most important works; forming a perspective on scientific observation that incorporated a complex view of experience, rather than prioritising the position of 'pure' sense data.
Alfred North Whitehead (1861 1947) was a prominent logician, mathematician and philosopher in the early twentieth century and helped pioneer the 'process philosophy' approach to metaphysics. He was Professor of Philosophy at Harvard University until his retirement in 1937.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the heart of scientific thought, questioning the very foundation upon which our understanding of the physical world is built. Challenging traditional notions of space, time, and matter, the author argues that the true building blocks of nature are not static entities, but rather interconnected events unfolding across space and time. Through a critical examination of Newtonian physics, the theory of relativity, and the revolutionary ideas of thinkers like Berkeley and Kant, the author constructs a new framework for understanding the fundamental concepts of science. This journey takes us from the macroscopic world of planets and stars to the microscopic realm of molecules and electrons, revealing the limitations of our traditional scientific models. By exploring the nature of perception and the intricate relationships between events, the author ultimately paints a picture of a dynamic and interconnected universe, where the flow of time and the interconnectedness of things are paramount. This book invites us to re-examine our assumptions about the physical world and offers a fresh perspective on the meaning and significance of scientific knowledge.
