The Making of Religion is author Andrew Lang's examination of how various groups throughout history arrived at the idea of God. Lang's book argues that divine intervention may be necessary for humans to approach the recognition of an all-powerful god, and he uses psychological, anthropological, and historical research to present his argument.

The first section of the book examines phenomena that were unexplainable at the time, and thus lead certain peoples to begin constructing the concept of a higher power. Lang also examines miracles, and how these unexplained events led people to belief in God.

The latter portion of the book tackles the history of the development of the idea of God. Lang examines how the idea of God evolved throughout different societies, ultimately arguing that man's "primitive logic leads him to seek for a cause or maker of things."

Lang's book is not always politically correct, and some of the classifications of ethnic groups as "low savages" may offend some readers.

About the Author:

Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

Book Description Forgotten Books. Paperback. Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. 426 pages. Dimensions: 8.9in. x 6.0in. x 1.3in.The following computer-generated description may contain errors and does not represent the quality of the book. Dear Principal Donaldson, I hope you will permit me to lay at the feet of the University of St. Andrews, in acknowledgment of her life-long kindnesses to her old pupil, these chapters on the early History of Religion. They may be taken as representing the Gifford Lectures delivered by me, though in fact they contain very little that was spoken from Lord Giffords chair. I wish they were more worthy of an Alma Mater which fostered in the past the leaders of forlorn hopes that were destined to triumph; and the friends of lost causes who fought bravely against Fate Patrick Hamilton, Gargill, and Argyll, Beaton and Montrose, and Dundee. Believe me Very sincerely yours, Andrew Lang. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
