9781440171871: Cave Gossip

Karl Wisent, separated from his wife Heike, teaches at an all-girls' school in Paris. On a Saturday afternoon, his accidental meeting of Hélène, who lives with Gaspard, an actor, turns his life upside down. A year later, Karl decides to end his marriage and marry Hélène. Will she leave Gaspard for Karl?

Soon thereafter, Karl's grandmother offers him her house in the hills west of Avignon for the summer. In order to escape Paris, he accepts. On his journey south he meets old friends and explores a series of caves full of primitive drawings. For a while, he is happy, but things take a nasty turn when Heike arrives at the house with her new boyfriend and two Americans in tow. If that is not enough, an American friend, Dutch Vogel, returns from the first Gulf War, worn out and angry.

Karl discovers that he has somehow attracted these troubled people and their calamities and that if he doesn't discover the reason why, he will never be rid of them.

From the Author:

The novel, Cave Gossip, grew from the themes and tropes of my award-winning poem, "Cave Gossip" (2007) and my experiences working in France and Germany. In the poem, I imagined a newly-exiled Adam and Eve, trying to understand what is happening to them. They find solace at night in front of a fire my making up stories about their plight; and, in so doing they mythologize their existence. The novel Cave Gossip postulates that not only do modern man and woman unconsciously continue the process of myth-making to explain their lives in the same way as my fictional Adam and Eve but by following this ritual of myth-making they sometimes repeat the stories and tales to their detriment. Only by becoming conscious of their myth can they overcome them.

About the Author:

Keith Harvey is an international attorney, who divides his time between his offices in Dallas, Texas and Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He is the author of two novels, Vogel Flies South and Vogel and the White Bull-and a collection of poetry-Petroglyphs.
