About the Author:

Charles M. Tatum, PhD, is professor of Spanish and Chicano studies at the University of Arizona.

From Booklist:

The Latino population is the fastest growing in the U.S., and the cultures that make up such a large group are by no means homogeneous. Tatum’s encyclopedia, rather than attempting a comprehensive look at the subject, gives readers an introduction to the variety of cultures within the Latino population by exploring nine areas of expressive culture, among them “Art”; “Celebrations, Holidays, and Festivals”; “Literature”; “Media, Film, Television, and Sports”; and “Religion, Spirituality, and Beliefs.” A chronology and narrative chapters titled “Identities, Labels, and Terms,” “Historical Overview of U.S. Latinos,” and “The Geographical Experience of Latinos in the United States” begin volume 1, followed by the signed entries. Additional “Spotlights” feature important figures, topics, or events (“Spotlight on History: The Alamo,” for example). Volume 3 includes a list of contributors and their affiliations and an index. Black-and-white images are found throughout. The encyclopedia entries succeed in highlighting the variety among Latino cultures. The food and cooking section is particularly interesting in this regard. The entry on empanadas is almost three pages long and discusses, among others, Puerto Rican empadillas, Brazilian empadinhas, and Argentinean empanadas al horno. The introductory material found in volume 1 functions almost as a bonus textbook for the set. The essay on identities and labels is particularly eye-opening, pointing out how the term Hispanic, among other issues, ignores the African roots of groups such as Puerto Ricans and Dominicans because the word itself tends to be translated as “white” or “European.” Readers also find roughly 30 pages of primary source documents that helped shape Latino culture in the U.S. The encyclopedia is recommended for high-school libraries or any public or undergraduate library in need of an introductory resource on Latino culture in the U.S. --Emily Compton-Dzak
