9781441450012: Impact On American Higher Education: Prevalence Of The

The Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) category is the APA's third and final eating disorder. Since becoming a clinical category in 1994, EDNOS is the most frequently diagnosed eating disorder - occurring in far greater numbers than anorexia and bulimia combined. Since males rarely meet the criteria for anorexia or bulimia, EDNOS is often the only category into which males fall. The higher degree of difficulty in identifying males with eating disorders compared to females is further complicated when males are involved in athletics. The training norms practiced become an ideal means to conceal eating disorder behaviors. As the preferred behavior of eating disordered males, the display of excessive and obligatory exercise can be the best indicator of an eating disorder. Colleges must begin to notice the "warning signs" of their male student-athletes. Dr. Suglia's study considered a wide range of sports with male athletes finding more than half had EDNOS.

About the Author:

Rob Suglia, Ph.D. graduated summa cum laude with a doctorate in higher education administration from the University at Buffalo - New York state's largest public research institution. Dr. Suglia shares his expertise on eating disorders by lecturing nationally on the topics of males, athletes, and the EDNOS category. Dr. Suglia was the first researcher to conduct a study that controlled for EDNOS with an exclusive male athlete sample outside of a hospital setting. Dr. Suglia was also the first to scientifically test for the Eating Disorder Bodybuilding Type (EDBT) classification - a new category put forth by Harvard researchers that is defined by six specific criteria linking obligatory exercise and social constraints to an underlying eating disorder. This new classification is similar in nature to such terms as anorexia athletica, muscle dysmorphia, or the "Adonis Complex." Rob currently resides in Golden, Colorado and can be reached for speaking engagements and presentations at rob.suglia@gmail.com. The combination of Rob's expertise, former athletic participation, and years of treatment for EDNOS gives him a unique perspective on being a male athlete with an eating disorder. This combination along which years of eating disorder research has provided him with the knowledge of the risk factors, warning signs, social stigmas, and the "secret" ways males will hide their illness and behaviors through the use of athletics
