9781442107946: Building a Strategy for Fitness: a model to reach and sustain total fitness & health

Ever wonder why after dieting and going to the gym constantly you do not get the results you are looking for? How many videos or pieces of equipment have you bought from infomercials, only to sell them at a garage sale. I went through all these cycles, like you, and I decided to make a change. You can find out what I discovered that led to me losing 135 pounds and sustaining the vast majority of that loss for over twelve years. It is not about dieting or equipment, or even which exercises are the best. It is about knowledge and tracking. Increase your knowledge about your body, how food affects your body and how food fuels your body. Develop a strategy for fitness versus haphazardly selecting what is the fad of the day. The more educated you are about your body and optimal movement, the more likely you will lose fat, gain muscle, increase strength, and establish balance.

From the Author:

Strategy For Fitness was a book born out of necessity.  I didn't choose to enter into the fitnessworld.  However, once I was in thefitness world I felt the need to find out why an industry worth billions ofdollars was flourishing, but obesity and related diseases were on therise.  It just didn't seem to make sense.

I worked as a consultant in thebusiness world enmeshed instrategy for over thirty years.  When Ileft the corporate community and retired at age fifty-eight, I weighed 335 pounds and my healthwas suffering. I lost 135 pounds in a little over a year and have sustained eighty percent of that loss for over twelve years.  I fluctuate between 240 and 210 depending on what is happening in my life. At that weight I still am healthy and fit. At least that is what my doctor told me.

I decided to select a gym and put forth an honest effort to lose weight and become more fit.  I soon became enthralled with the fitnessindustry, an industry I had never worked as aconsultant.  Although, in some ways, itreminded me of the fast food business, long hours, low wages, and everyone waspushing to make money.  As a part-timesales person, I was uniquely positioned to watch the gym work and the personaltrainers in the gym.  Most werehard-working people and friendly, but it was clear they had fallen into thetrap of working in the gym and not for the client.  You would think the Gym's goal would be for customersto become fit, but in fact, it is well known inside the gym circuit that peoplewill spend hundreds of dollars up front and then stop coming as early as amonth after signing a contract with the gym.

For trainers working in a gymincreasing revenue meant working more hours and there were only so many hoursin the day to train.  The gym set thecost of personal training and kept about 70% of the income.  I mention this so you can see the flaw in thefitness industries motivation when it comes to you.  Whether it is a gym, equipment sellers, supplements, diet programs, or personal trainers, they all have the primarygoal of increasing their income by addicting you to them or their products.  Talk to anyone, and you will find hardlyanyone stays with a trainer for months let alone years to stay fit unless it isa movie star or someone whose appearance affects their income.

All this got me tothinking.  If you just want to becomehealthier through fitness why is it so difficult.  It is at this point I realized the fitnessindustry is not interested in your fitness as an individual as much as they areyour dependence on them as a revenue stream. So, I realized I had to make a break from the gym world; I discoveredthe flaw that kept people from becoming fit and sustaining their fitness evenwith a gym membership and personal training. You see it is not just about exercise and food.  If you want to become fit and healthy and sustainfitness and health, there is much more to understand.

I discovered through myefforts the key to losing weight, becoming fit, and maintaining fitness andhealth was knowledge.  So, being a consultant,I couldn't resist developing a model to become fit based on changing what I sawhappening in the fitness industry.
It was evident to me early onthat I had spent money but had not gained much knowledge about fitness.  My trainer would work me but not educate me.Now, he would tell be about eating better, but he worked up the foodcharts.  He was there to correct poorform when lifting weights but never explained why the poor form was hurting mydevelopment.  In other words, he wastrying to keep me dependent on him.  Thispoint in my life I had some time to begin educating myself about fitness. In fact,I became a certified personal trainer, not because I want to become a trainerin a gym, but because the courses provided a wealth of knowledge about food, exercise, emotional barriers, and physiology that I never knew.  Everything I learned as a personal trainer isavailable to the public and is easily accessible.  A personal trainer course takes all thatunorganized information and chunks it into categories to help you learn aboutyour body, exercise, and food.

Understanding that becomingfit is less about diet and exercise than about knowledge was the genesis of mybook BuildingA Strategy For Fitness.  Iwanted people to know how to plan their fitness. I wanted them to develop a planfor the fitness.  I wanted to provide thebare essentials that would talk about food, exercise, and physiology in anorganized way so they could go to the millions of websites and find moreinformation about what they can do to become fit and stay healthy for years tocome.

A strategy is designedto simplify not complicate matters.  Onceyou grasp this concept, you will see howthe book can help you control your fitness and reduce your dependency onothers. You manage your health.  The strategy takes the complexity out ofbecoming fit.  It is not a big mysterylike the fitness industry would have you believe.

I hope my book helps you as much as the process helpedme.  It allows you to use the tools thatwork best for you and help you choose from the myriad of products available to you.  If you purchase the book, please leave a review and if you like it, please refer it to everyone you feel could use the help.  My goal is to touch as many people as possibleto fight obesity and the many diseases itbrings about.  Best wishes for yoursuccess.
