American short-story writer and novelist. Deland is known for her cleverly drawn character studies. Her stories mostly revolve around life in a close-knit community and deal with people's real emotions and troubles. Deland's popularity rests on her collections of short stories. These include Old Chester Tales (1899), Dr. Lavender's People (1903), Around Old Chester (1915), and New Friends in Old Chester (1924). Her other writings consist of John Ward, Preacher (1888), The Awakening of Helena Richie (1906), Iron woman (1911), and The Vehement Flame (1922). Deland's pen also produced the autobiographical If This I Be, As I Suppose It Be (1935), and Golden Yesterdays (1941). For her humanitarian services during World War I, Deland was awarded the Legion of Honour. She was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1926.
