The Review as Art and Communication not only presents the idea that book reviews, record reviews, theatrical reviews and reviews of any genre can be substantive essays on their own-expounding and elaborating on the concepts and ideas of the original material critiqued - but it also explores the shelf-life of the review: the odd phenomenon that just like other forms of art some stand the test-of-time, and some do not. This book also collects the book reviews of one scholar: Max J. Skidmore, Sr. into one volume, using his ideas and themes to illustrate how reviews have a life of their own, evolving and developing beyond the original work covered.

About the Author:

Max Joseph Joey Skidmore, Jr. has an interdisciplinary background with an M.A. in Communication Studies and an M.F.A. in Theatre. He teaches classes in a wide variety of subjects including the Presidential Debates, Speech, Journalism, Sound Design for Film, Fundamentals of Communication, English Literature, and Mass Communication. His published work includes articles in the University of Nevada-Las Vegas' Popular Culture Review, the European Legacy, and six albums of original music including Joey Skidmore on France's Dixie Frog label, and Ventriloquist Doll on Spain's Sunthunder Records. Skidmore currently splits his time between the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Cleveland Chiropractic College, and the Joey Skidmore Band. He is working on a new album, as well as two new films: a documentary on '70s rocker Jim Dandy from Black Oak Arkansas, and a comedic vampire film starring the French band Les Fossoyeurs. Skidmore resides in Kansas City, MO with his children.

Review:

Skidmore s range is impressive, his writing clear. In one short review he conveys the gist and aims of Joe Kelleher s allusive Theatre and Politics [sic] and persuades me that theater as both out of time and happening in time a very opal, as Feste would put it is a source of its power. --Professor Toni Dorfman, Yale School of Drama

Max Skidmore s reviews are gems. His son has reminded us of that, and preserved an archive of cultural critique that will interest general readers as well as students and teachers in US history, politics, and American studies. Book reviews are vital and often overlooked forms of cultural production and Skidmore s son, Joey, offers his own lively interdisciplinary take on his father s work. This is a collection that crosses many boundaries and will stand the test of time. --Stacilee Ford, Professor of History, the University of Hong Kong

The Review as Art and Communication explodes the false dichotomy between producers and reviewers and the relative value of these communicative roles. The book reviews of Max Skidmore, Sr. in particular demonstrate that, at their best, reviews are critical conversations between intellectuals and necessary to our understanding of culture, power, and policy. --Andrew R. Cline, PhD, Associate Professor of Media and Journalism, Missouri State University
