From the Back Cover:

The fall of state socialism in Eastern Europe and the SovietUnion was arguably the most significant political event of the late20th century. For many, this dramatic historic shift was symbolizedby the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, an iconic emblem of fearand division. Yet only twenty years later, many newwalls—both physical and imaginary—have been erectedacross Eastern Europe, including redrawn state borders, partitionedcities, and myriad walled-off urban spaces.

Iron Curtains: Gates, Suburbs, and Privatization of Space inthe Post-socialist City explores the human dimension ofnew city-building that has emerged in East Europe. Utilizingfirsthand research culled from more than 100 interviews conductedprimarily in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia—a city whosepublic spaces have unraveled over the last two decades—SoniaHirt examines the ways people live and experience the new,post-socialist urbanism. Also addressed are what these new spacestell us about their builders, users, and inhabitants. Embracing anexplicitly cultural approach, the author suggests thatdisappointment with socialist and post-socialist conditions has ledto mass skepticism toward the public domain, further resulting in aradical de-construction of public spaces. IronCurtains offers provocative insights into the complexrelationship between society and space during times of fundamentalchange.

About the Author:

Sonia Hirt is Associate Professor of Urban Affairsand Planning at the School of Public and International Affairs andthe College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech, andwas recently Visiting Associate Professor of Urban Planning at theGraduate School of Design at Harvard University.
